Plant hardy perennial Astrantia major ‘Venice’ in cottage garden borders or in the damp areas surrounding a pond and enjoy these stunning, ruby-red pincushion flowers all summer long. More vigorous than other varieties, these richly-coloured astrantia will thrive at the edge of woodland and other challenging garden areas, creating attractive clumps of colour set against dark foliage. The long-lasting blooms also make wonderful cut flowers – fresh or dried. Height: 75cm (30″). Spread: 45cm (18″). Size 1 bare root supplied.

On delivery of your bareroot astrantia plants please plant them at the earliest opportunity. Should soil conditions prevent planting directly into borders (if soil is frozen or waterlogged), bareroots should be potted up, watered sparingly and grown on in a cool position for planting out at a later date. Choose a sunny or semi shaded position in moist, fertile well drained soil and work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the bareroot with its roots spread out and deep enough that the crown of the plant is just a few cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and firm the plant in gently. Leave a slight depression around the plant – this will help to direct water towards the roots. Water well to settle the soil.
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide perennials in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour. Deadhead faded astrantia flowers regularly to prevent self seeding if further plants are not required.
