Astonishingly beautiful, this slow growing variety of Japanese Maple makes a spectacular specimen tree, with a pleasing rounded habit. Its finely cut foliage creates a delicate lacy effect, transforming from flame red to fiery orange as autumn progresses. Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Rubrum’ is perfect for borders and containers. Choose a sheltered spot in dappled shade where its feathery leaves will be protected from drying winds and strong sun. Height: 2m (6′,6″). Spread: 3m (10′). Supplied in a 9cm pot.

Pot up acer plants and grow them on in cool frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them in borders outdoors. Grow acer in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dapple shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
